Better Sound Starts HereBetter Sound Starts Here

Sound should be pleasurable!

As a music lover, creator or professional, your relationship with sound *must* be harmonious.

But very few rooms were designed with great sound in mind, and most actually harm the quality of music and speech.

Our passion is your creative journey – better sound starts here!

5cm5cm

Why is 5cm thickness so important?

Tiles less than 5cm thick absorb significantly less noise. This is a particular problem when working with and listening to music, where thinner materials significantly less of the problem frequencies. Check out the performance chart for more info.

smellsmell

Does Foam Smell?

Unfortunately, *all* foam smells a little when new, but it does disappear! A minority of people don’t like this, but it is a compromise with such a low-cost sound absorption material. Part of the odour is the fire treatment we apply – untreated foam can be a fire risk in the home!

If you are sensitive to ‘new car’ smell then leave the tiles outside for a few days or instead opt for a non-foam-based product such as Friendly Fibre.

How to install

We recommend Flexi Fit tabs for removable installation or spray adhesive for low-cost permanent installation. Either option should be purchased separately from the tiles depending on your needs. See the online video course for more information.

There Is No Such Thing As Sound Proofing Foam! There Is No Such Thing As Sound Proofing Foam!

It is a common misconception that acoustic foam can be used for sound proofing.

For sound proofing you need to make a heavy barrier – normally extra layers of plasterboard on the walls and ceiling or even a new wall in front of the old one.

Acoustic foam is lightweight and porous so is not going to help you on its own!

There are some noise situations where acoustic foam can help but only when the right approach is taken and it will normally involve other materials as well.

FAQ

  1. Is this foam fire safe? Yes! The fire rating is UL94 HF1 making it suitable for home use.
  2. Are these tiles compressed in the packaging? No! They are supplied in a suitable cardboard box and will not be squashed or deformed when you unpack them.
  3. Can I soundproof my room with acoustic foam? No - foam is for acoustic treatment. Soundproofing is normally achieved with extra plasterboard, secondary glazing etc.
  4. How much foam do I need? It depends on the rooms size and purpose. As a rough guide: voiceover work requires 8-16 tiles if you place them close to the microphone, bedroom studios (6-12 SQM floor area) require around 16-32 tiles; larger rooms (12-20 SQM floor area) require 32-64 tiles – more if there is no carpet or other soft furnishings.
  5. Where should I put my acoustic foam tiles? It depends on the rooms purpose and layout. Head over to Better Sound Starts Here Community Facebook group for some personalised advice and to access to the Online Video Course
  6. Can acoustic foam treat bass? In principle yes but in practice absorbing below 100Hz would require very large foam traps. Polyester fibre bass traps such as Spectrum 2.0 Traps are more suitable (see performance chart)
