Hulusi gourd from the ethnic Dai Yunnan community
The hulusi or calabash fl?te is a Chinese instrument with free reed. It stands vertically and the three bamboo tubes come out of its gourd body. Hulusi originated from the Dai ethnic tribe in southwest China, this has existed since the Qin and Han dynasties (from 221 BC. J.C. ¨¤ 220). The sound of hulusi is untranvocative and pure and its melodies are the lightest and are close to that of a clarinet. Dai men play it to present their love to women. Hulusi is now quite widespread in China, it was recently adopted by European musical composers and artists. Rohan Leach in England, Rapheal De Cock in Belgium and Herman Witkam in the Netherlands all led this instrument in a new direction.
