Roland Tyson began manufacturing clothing for outdoor activities on an old industrial sewing machine in his childhood bedroom in 1983, at the age of 17. As a young outdoor enthusiast, Roland realized she had passion and talent for creating equipment for cutting-edge outdoor activities. Soon he was designing and manufacturing equipment for other Australian adventurers. In 1991, after equipping an unusual first ascent of Mount Everest (a hike of more than, 1126 kilometers and 8850 meters high from sea level to a solo summit), Sea to Summit was born.

Rolands drive to design the best equipment, the lightest and most durable, would take it further into Australias remote interior and eventually into the Himalayas. In these wild places, you could put your inventions to the test.

In 1993, Roland joined Penny Sanderson, who had spent 6 years at Australian Geographic. His passion for exploration and innovation fit perfectly with Sea to Summit. She and Roland began traveling several months a year, spending time climbing, sailing, hiking and biking. Wherever they went, they tested products and iterated the design.

Sea to Summit quickly became a successful global brand, with Penny and Rolands love of travel and design as a foundation. Together, they own and manage Sea to Summit, and continue to participate in every step of the journey, from raw material development to putting the perfected equipment in the hands of customers around the world.
