The Face of the Holy Shroud of Turin

The Face of the Holy Shroud of TurinThe Face of the Holy Shroud of Turin

The Holy Face

This is the face of Jesus imprinted on the linen of the Holy Shroud of Turin, from which the image of the Medal was obtained.

“Nothing whatsoever will be refused to us” through the Holy Face

Prayers to the Holy Face

O Jesus, Who in Thy cruel Passion didst become the “Reproach of men and the Man of Sorrows,” I worship Thy Divine Face. Once it shone with the beauty and sweetness of the Divinity: now for my sake it is become as the face of a leper. Yet in that disfigured Countenance I recognise Thy infinite Love, and I am consumed with the desire of loving Thee and of making Thee loved by all mankind. The tears that streamed in such abundance from Thine Eyes are to me as precious pearls which I delight to gather, that with their infinite worth I may ransom the souls of poor sinners.

O Jesus, Whose Face is the sole beauty that ravishes my heart, I may not behold here upon earth the sweetness of Thy Glance, nor feel the ineffable tenderness of Thy Kiss. I bow to Thy Will—but I pray Thee to imprint in me Thy Divine Likeness, and I implore Thee so to inflame me with Thy Love, that it may quickly consume me and I may soon reach the Vision of Thy glorious Face in Heaven. Amen.

Holy Shroud Of Turin Prayer

O Lord, who in the most Holy Shroud, which enfolded Thy adorable Body on being taken down from the Cross, hast left manifestations of Thy presence here below and evident tokens of Thy love, by the merits of Thy holy passion and out of regard for this venerable linen which served for Thy burial, mercifully grant, we beseech Thee, that in the resurrection we also may share in that glory, in which Thou shalt reign for eternity. Amen.

Description The shroud is rectangular, measuring approximately 4.4 by 1.1 metres (14 ft 5 in × 3 ft 7 in). The cloth is woven in a three-to-one herringbone twill composed of flax fibrils. Its most distinctive characteristic is the faint, brownish image of a front and back view of a naked man with his hands folded across his groin. The two views are aligned along the midplane of the body and point in opposite directions. The front and back views of the head nearly meet at the middle of the cloth. The image of the "Man of the Shroud" has a beard, moustache, and shoulder-length hair parted in the middle. He is muscular and tall (various experts have measured him as from 1.70 to 1.88 m or 5 ft 7 in to 6 ft 2 in) Reddish-brown stains are found on the cloth, showing various wounds that, according to proponents, correlate with the yellowish image, the pathophysiology of crucifixion, and the Biblical description of the death of Jesus. In May 1898 Italian photographer Secondo Pia was allowed to photograph the shroud. He took the first photograph of the shroud on 28 May 1898. In 1931, another photographer, Giuseppe Enrie, photographed the shroud and obtained results similar to Pias.In 1978, ultraviolet photographs were taken of the shroud. The shroud was damaged in a fire in 1532 in the chapel in Chambery, France. There are some burn holes and scorched areas down both sides of the linen, caused by contact with molten silver during the fire that burned through it in places while it was folded. Fourteen large triangular patches and eight smaller ones were sewn onto the cloth by Poor Clare nuns to repair the damage.

The Story of this Medal:

Giuseppina De Micheli, born in 1890, was 12 years old when on Good Friday she heard a very distinct voice that told her: "Nobody gives me a kiss of love in the face, to repair the kiss of Judas?" Believing that the voice heard her all and seeing that they all kissed the Wounds and not the Face of Jesus, in his heart he exclaimed: "I give you the kiss of love, or Jesus have patience" and when his turn came, he printed, with all the ardor of the his heart, a kiss on the face. On 16 May 1914 he wore the religious habit of the Daughters of the Immaculate Conception of Buenos Aires, taking the name of Sr. M. Pierina. In 1928 she became Mother Superior for the House of Milan and for Italy and in 1939 for the new one in Rome. On the first Friday of Lent in 1936 Jesus, after having participated in the spiritual pains of the agony of Gethsemane, with the face veiled in blood and with profound sadness, said to her: "I want my Face, which reflects the intimate pains of my soul, the pain and the love of my Heart, be more honored. Who contemplates me consoles me ”. On the following Passion Tuesday, Jesus said to her again: "Whenever you look at my face, I will pour my love into the hearts and through my Holy Face you will get the salvation of so many souls." And from the Diary of Mother Pierina we know that on another occasion Jesus told her: "My beloved, I renew to you the offer of my Holy Face so that you may offer it unceasingly to the Eternal Father; with this offer you will get the salvation and sanctification of souls. Then when you offer it for my priests you will work wonders. " On the 1st Tuesday of 1937 Jesus told her: "It could be that some souls fear that the devotion and worship of my Holy Face will diminish those of my Heart. Tell them that, on the contrary, it will be completed and increased. Contemplating my Face the souls will participate in my pains and feel the need to love and to repair. Is this not true devotion to my Heart? " In May 1938 she herself wrote in her Diary: "While I was praying in front of the Tabernacle, I thought I saw the Madonna. He was holding a scapular formed by two white flannels joined by a cord. A flannel carried the image of the Holy Face, the other a Host, surrounded by a radial pattern. The Madonna moved towards me and told me: "Listen to me well and report to the [spiritual] Father: this scapular is a weapon of defense, a shield of fortress, a pledge of mercy that Jesus wants to give to the world in these times of sensuality or hatred against God and the Church. The true apostles are few, a divine remedy is necessary, and this remedy is the Holy Face of Jesus. All those who will wear a scapular like this and will be able, every Tuesday, to visit the Blessed Sacrament. Sacrament to repair the outrages the Holy Face of my Son Jesus received in his painful passion and every day receives in the Eucharistic sacrament - will be strengthened in faith, - ready to defend it - and to overcome all internal and external spiritual difficulties. - More will make a serene death, - under the amiable gaze of my divine Son “.
