The company

Since 1972, MXR has pioneered effect pedals, developing strong, small boxes with 100% analog tone.

Keith Barr and his partner Terry Sherwood owned an audio repair shop in Rochester, New York, where they were shocked by the poor guitar effects their customers brought with them. Barr and Sherwood decided they could offer guitarists a reliable pedal with clear sound. This experience led them to form MXR and they began producing their first pedal with original effects: the Phase 90.

Next, MXR added three more pedals to the main range: Distortion+, Dyna Comp Compressor and Blue Box Octave Fuzz Soon, the growing company, produced thousands upon thousands of pedals and distributed them all over the planet. Guitarists connected to MXR pedals, and those multi-coloured box chains became synonymous with efficient sounds and limitless possibilities.

The intuitive use and bullet-proof reliability of MXR pedals allowed guitar professionals to reproduce the sounds of their hit records, whether on the road or in the recording studio.

The music business can be fictitious, however, MXRs fate will change in the 1980s, when other producers began to catch up. MXR closed, but basic products never escaped the country. Jim Dunlop recognized it and acquired and resurrected the MXR brand in 1987. The acquisition of Dunlop allowed guitarists to get their hands on classic MXR effects again, and also represented a continuation of Keith Barrs legacy with the eventual release of many other projects.

Dunlop continues the tradition of the classic MXR pedals that have defined the brand, producing the Carbon Copy and Fullbore Metal. Dunlop also added a line dedicated to bass effects, MXR Bass which recently released the Bass Octave Deluxe pedals and Bass Envelope Filter with which it won the Bass Player Magazine award and the Platinum award from Guitar World Magazine. The MXR Custom Shop brings back to life all vintage models such as the Phase 45 Hand-Wired, or limited edition pedals using high quality components, such as the Custom Comp.
